As you know, Canada won the right to host the 2010 Winter Olympics. Now, we have just completed a logo and it has come out to harsh criticism. It is supposed to represent an inukshuk, but it isn't even close. And the games are to be held in BC, so that natives there are outraged that something from their culture wasn't used, if a First People's motif was to be used. I don't think this represents Canada at all, and besides, it looks like gumby with a pac-man for a head. Sigh!
Would appreciate your thoughts. Scott ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Ces gens, Jondalar, ils sourient. Ils me sourient. - Ayla |

Scott, that says "man in loud clothes flattened by steamroller" to me. It certainly doesn't make me think "Vancouver" or "Canada" or even "Winter Olympics"! I can't see many people wanting to buy a soft toy or other souvenir of this, and isn't that usually at least part of what the logo is about - making money? I hope that the people responsible get a large dose of common sense from somewhere and change it. "Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement." Gandalf. (JRR Tolkien)

Its as bad as the Atlanta logo, BC has made the standard!!!!! I sometimes wonder at what these design guys are thinking. If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice. |

Well, it kinda looks like an inukshuk (or an inunnguaq would prolly be a better description, they are the human looking forms, right?) or is it that inukshuk aren't representitive enough of all of Canada, only the arctic regions? (It's been a long time since I studied this, so I might be misremembering.) If they were trying to represent the colors of the five rings, shouldn't that dark blue "arms" be black... or was it just coincidence that the colors turned out as such? Has there been a GOOD Olympic logo in the past handful of Olympics? Some of the old posterlike logos were cool, but the recent ones just haven't been any good. The abstract picture trend is just boring (Barcelona 92, Albertville 92, Atlanta 96, Sydney 00, Salt Lake 02) Lillehammer's 94 was okay, Seoul 88 was pretty good (one version?), LA 84 was interesting but not great (one version, the other was just bad), Moscow 80 was just plain boring, Calgary 88 was okay, but too much like Sarajevo 84, which was more boring, and Lake Placid 80... I don't even know what to say about it. There's more lame logos, but I only felt comfortable commenting on those in my lifetime. Here's a good site that shows a lot (Maybe all, don't know for sure) of the logos: http://www.geocities.com/olympiclogos/ and another that shows a few that are different: http://www98.pair.com/msmonaco/Almanac/Logos.html Does anyone remember the logos in dispute from these sites? Mostly Harmless |

LOL Snowwolf and bear! I agree, we have stooped down to meet the standard, way down! I am not sure of the colours in terms of why they were picked. I shudder to think how much this woman was paid. Thanks for the list of logos Rhi. Compared to that, it's looking a wee bit better! Scott ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Ces gens, Jondalar, ils sourient. Ils me sourient. - Ayla |

Who designed that, Bob or Doug, and after how many cans? Why doesn't the committee go with truth-in-advertising and just put up a green dollar sign (maybe with a little crown over it to symbolize the committee members)? My Social Studies class was discussing it. Our teacher showed us what he would have done. It was a simple tree that used all of the olympic colours (he said that's what they were doing). It looked good and seemed better than the inukshuk |

this didn't quite work, but you should be able to get the link. This is the basic idea. The colours can be swiched though. |

Thanks, Frentel. It didn't work because the board doesn't support pictures in bmp format. I converted it to jpg, and here's the picture:

Thanks, Annie. Hmmm, I kind of like that one. It does seem Canadian. Machiavelli was pretty devious. For a guy... |

Looks good to me too! Of course the US will probably charge an extra duty on it to have it put on products or in advertising or on their team's clothing - being softwood lumber and all! Thanks! Scott ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Ces gens, Jondalar, ils sourient. Ils me sourient. - Ayla |

Most of our trees are in Canada right now but we'll come get them just as soon as we finish getting all our oil out of Iraq. "Uh huh. Uh huh. Okay. Um, can you repeat the part of the stuff where you said all about the ... things?"
