I watched a show recently(probably on CNN) where scientists say that red wine reduces weight !? They tested it on lab mice.. I tried to google more about that, but to no avail.. Did anyone watch the show ? My Chess Blog " I failed to make the chess team because of my height " - Woody Allen |

Red wine is supposed to reduce LDL and boost HDL, but it supposedly only works well with people who have always done this or regularly drink alcohol. Starting from scratch can have adverse reactions. Dark chocolate has the same effect. |

The website says moderation for the heart disease... Says nothing about reducing weight, and judging from the occurrence of beer bellies I wouldn't advocate a beer diet. And I assume that "a lot" is not what they refer to as "moderation" (as in 1-2 glasses max per day for men) Everyone has a motive for giving arguments. But only the arguments given matter. |

ssr,

Good point, I assumed it reduces weight as overwieght people have high levels of LDL.. http://www.ehealthmd.com/library/lowercholesterol/ LC_weight.html

1 beer of 355ml is equal to 153 calories of which 11% protein, 89% (12) carbs and sodium. You can look it up here. http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_food.html I like a pint of beer when I go to the pub, but I can immediately detect if I don't change anything about my diet except for the beer consumation when it's above 2 on a night out. A glass of red wine (145ml) is only 125 calories instead. It's higher in carb percentage, but then the carbs is only 3.8 (in comparison to 12 with beer), and a third of the beer value of sodium. And if I wanna get druk, without needing to watch my weight, I'll drink a glass of tequila gold (not so good for the memory though, doubt it's much good for the liver either). 30 ml = 69 calories, with no protein, no carbs, no fat and no sodium. Everyone has a motive for giving arguments. But only the arguments given matter. |

Hitman, I would think that drinking beer doesn't equal for good play in a chess tournament! Eeeek! Give me a good glass of Scotch any day sweetsunray!!! I don' t think it is the alcohol or the carbs in the red wine that give you the French effect! l like a good red too, but again, never during chess! People make staying in shape way too scientific. Just pay attention to your body, it'll do the work for you. Then again, you can see how closely I pay attention to moderation by the size of the Guinness I'm drinking in my profile picture. |

Nah, staying in shape is simply fun: dancing African Dance two nights a week, lots of outdoors exercise, and immensely joying my home-made salads and pastas. I live healthy without measuring things. But if we're going to discuss the scientific effects of food, then adding scientific measurements and findings seems to be the appropriate choice of venue. Or perhaps I'm jsut rationalising my preference for tequila And I should quit with smoking Everyone has a motive for giving arguments. But only the arguments given matter. |

I live healthy without measuring things as well. I play softball, baseball, box, do kung fu, do yoga, work out etc etc. I used to dance semi-pro but gave that up a long time ago. I kinda miss it. I also eat ice cream everyday, |

I live healthy and happily too. Life is too short to sweat the small stuff, like counting calories for example! Hagen Daz and Guinness - well there is two food groups! Both are a meal, though best enjoyed separately. SSR, where the hell do you find the time to post with a schedule like that? I mean, after all that, and then the tequila...and I assume unlike Bats_out, a job too. Now if I had half your energy and half Bats_out's brains, I might even be able to adjust my species level from n to s. Scott ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Ces gens, Jondalar, ils sourient. Dont you remember the Wch ? have you been drinking too much tequila like ssr ? ----I play softball, baseball, box, do kung fu, do yoga, work out----- bats_out, whoa! are you planning to become a samurai or somethin ? ssr, ----Nah, staying in shape is simply fun---- ya it depends on the shape you like to stay in on a serious note.. thanks for the useful link ssr! I too smoke but can quit anytime I want to.. You guys lead a very healthy life compared to geeks like me.. I sit in front of the computer for long hours, play chess, watch TV.. the best exercise I do is play 9/8 ball My Chess Blog " I failed to make the chess team because of my height " - Woody Allen |

Scott: where the hell do you find the time to post with a schedule like that? Well... Apart from enjoying teaching, the teaching hours (20 hours a week) AND holidays gives me lots of free time to do much as I please. With a full time teaching job I have Thursdays off and Wednesday afternoon off. Of course I have to do about 15-20 hours a week of my teaching job at home (preparing, grading, administration, etc), but I can schedule it at the times most convenient for me. And then there's this damn strong constitution of mine that can make me go on with 4-5 hours of sleep per weekday night. So, that makes for about 100 hours in the week, of which I work about 40, and thus 60 hours of other time to spare. Nor do I have a partner or kids at the moment with whom I need to match my schedule. I do like to be active (mentally, socially and physically) and as a single woman I make it so active I don't have the time to sit at home and feel lonely. And when I am home, I can enjoy my repose doubly. I must confess though that I perhaps do need to make it less busy for myself, but I guess that's what holiday is for. Sorry Bats_out, couldn't resist! My wife is very supportive as well, and as I keep reminding her, Neanderthals are people too! Back to the topic, I heard that the red wine effect only accrues to those that have a history of drinking red wine, it isn't a casual fix. Scott ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Ces gens, Jondalar, ils sourient.
