Well, from aliens to the PC Colonies to the Physics farce of the next Ice age, good ol' Roland Emmerich is going to take a shot at a story 20,000 years after Ayla.
Yeh, Conan the Barbarian meets Muffy the Mammoth."There's mammoths everywhere. Always were, always will be." ~ Lovaduc, headman of the White Horse band of The People
I agree Matera. But it does remind us that the technology does exist to make awesome movies out of Jean Auel's Earth's Children series. I wonder if anyone has the movie rights? I remember Kendall Auel mentioning somewhere that she hoped to take a re-look at the movie idea.
Scott~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Ces gens, Jondalar, ils sourient. Ils me sourient. - Ayla
I saw it the other day... it was highly implausible, albeit moderately entertaining.
Don't read if you do not wish to be spoiled!
1. The female lead is very obviously wearing Mascara.
2. Woolly Mammoths. In Egypt. To help build Pyramids.
3. They manage to get from snowy, cold mountain to jungle to desert in about two, three days.
Again, if you ignore the implausibility, it's not so bad. In fact, it's somewhat enjoyable. And Earth's Children isn't exactly the essence of realistic. But anywho, if you're looking for realism... I wouldn't suggest seeing it.
Maybe they were racehorses disguised as woolly mammoths? If it's any comfort to you, the reviews I've seen tend to agree with you. OTOH, it seems to be doing well at the box office, FWIW. Anne GVisit my blog: The Writer's Daily Grind
Sidescraper: Yeah, that's the thing that confuses me - the reviews aren't that great, but it's doing well. I think it's a mixed issue. Plus, as I said, it's not a bad movie if you just want entertainment and popcorn... and I don't regret seeing it. But on the other hand, I think if you're looking for a movie that accurately portrays what living then would've been like and all, it's probably not it. Which I didn't expect completely, (Hollywood barely makes 2008 realistic, let alone 10,000 B.C.), but some stuff was beyond history and in the realm of sheer common sense.
I'd have to agree with both of you. The bottom line is, Hollywood doesn't really care about accuracy. They want to bring in the bucks at the box office. Some of these Hollywood types have learned that "the masses" will buy just about anything with a lot of fighting, some cute, scantily-clad young women, and a STory. Never mind whether the Story is accurate or not. So you will probably never see an "accurate" presentation of what prehistoric life may have been like. At least not from that quarter. Its not just Hollywood. I watch SCIENCE shows and pick out horribly obvious errors.
My most recent favorite is where the narrator explains that that early solar system planetoid collisions would occur VEERRRYYY slowly and they show it happening in a few seconds. LOL!
Second favorite is where they show a mammoth struck by a few spears 3 inches deep and it dies in 10 seconds. That's embarassing!Thank you, Carl Sagan and Richard Dawkins...
I watched this movie recently and found it entertaining. But it is not the prehistoric movie I am still waiting for.
I'm sure most will agree that the COTCB movie starring Daryl Hannah, left much to be desired.
Some day, when book 6 has been out long enough. It will be time for someone to make an earth's Children movie. Preferably, a HBO miniseries..... say, 6-2 hour episodes. Each one representing a book. Hell, If they want to make it longer, I would not complain. But realistically, they tend to condense books quite a bit when making them into movies
I say HBO because I like their work, they have no problem making R rated programming, and there would be no commercials.
If they made it today, I would have Dakota Fanning as a young Ayla (How old is Dakota?). Brad Pitt would be a good Broud. He wouldn't need much makeup. By the time Ayla reaches the Valley, I would have her played by Evan Rachel Wood.
Any suggestions on how this series would be produced and cast??
