"What! The legends are true!" he gasped. Mena, realizing the gravity of the situation, quickly called out over the com-unit, "Resume normal operations" he commanded. Fear and uncertainty can be dangerous in such a confined place. Mena knew this, and calming the passengers was first priority. Older Wife, in sync with Joston's own observations, nervously touched him on the shoulder, "Do you know the implications if the legends are true?" she asked. "Aye" he replied, "Time is of the essence, as we must prepare a greeting party" he finished. Older Wife, like a youthful spirit, spun around and sprung for the door. There were things to do, others to notify of the findings. Diplomacy was there only hope, she knew this, and did not hesitate to seek out one the more elderly on board. "Experience in these domains, I have not" she thought. "I must find Dorcan" and with that she hurried through the passages of the dreary ship's interior, heading to the only place she knew Dorcan resides. With a slight rap on the door, a low, cracked voice replied, "Who beckons at my door?" the voiced asked. "Tis I, the Older Wife of Mena" she respectfully answered. "Come in, a woman is always welcome in Dorcan's room" the old man said. "I come with news" she said with a nervous tone, one which did not escape the keen hearing the old man still possessed. "I know" he replied. "I have heard the inner realm and they have..." |

"I have heard the inner realm and they have decided that they are tired of being inside all the time. They've asked me if I can summon some sort of professional to install a door or perhaps a few large windows which do not lock from the outside." Dorcan did not expect or understand this, being an indoorsy sort of chap himself. He paused for several moments in what Older Wife hoped, at any rate, was the equivalent of serious thought. "I did not expect or understand this," the ancient sentient plumbing device finally gurgled, "and the problem certainly requires serious thought. Perhaps we ought to..." Older Wife turned to the Predictor. "How can we resolve this situation", she demanded. Predictor went into his usual trance. The chemicals it depended on were DNA-encoded from untold generations of RNA replicase actions and the socially supported matings of those with similar non-understood talents. , though they knew it not. Its answers were always true, if confusing and subject to multiple interpretations. It had become like the most hybridized of prized vegetables; outside the standard group-mating of the ordinary ones, and formulaic by specific ultra-genetic engineering. Predictor was no longer even either male or female, it was just "it". But very useful… Sometimes. You just had to have a talent for interpretation. It stated that the leader of one of the two kingdoms would lose the upcoming battle. Everyone was delighted until Xua mentioned that she knew of 4 kingdoms. Two were of Amber, one of Light, and one was of Color. It would be a long time before any would realize they had misunderstood what was meant by "light" . The broken marbles were tossed, the symbols for the 4 Kingdoms assigned , and the outcomes read. But the Predictor winced at the final sentence, because… Machiavelli was pretty devious. For a guy... |
