In terms of durability, one of the greatest of the greats. Changed his stripes at least three times from 1926 to the 1990's. Wrote the definitive star Wars-type story The Legion of Space and two and a half sequels, with a heroine who destroyed the moon with not much more than a hairpin (a ten-penny nail, actually). Followed it up with the first great sf based on probability waves and quantum mechanics, The Legion of Time, featuring the only sf ending in which the hero gets BOTH the heroine and the villainess. Not too many years later wrote one of the definitive light werewolf novels (More Than Human, about a wolf husband with a wife who's a witch), one of the definitive robot stories (With Folded Hands), series of stories based on "contraterrene matter" (Seetee), paired with Frederik Pohl for a series. And one of the first to deal with science fiction as an academician after getting a degre in English. A very worthy guy. |
