Another one of sf's gentle stylists from the Fantasy and Science Fiction heyday. Creator of a post-apocalyptic (?) world in which the U.S. eastern seaboard is submerged, another in which a colony of Martians observing earth for thousands of years faces imminent discovery. That's Davy and A Mirror for Observers, respectively. Also the very McCaffrey-like stranded explorer ship novel West of the Sun. Those who got caught up in the frenzy over Lois Lowry's The Giver will be intrigued by "Angel's Egg," a genuine piece of sf whimsy with an alien race that "saves" memories of the dying. Very, very highly recommended author, too bad he didn't write more. |

I enjoyed 'Davy'. It wasn't the best story I've ever read, but it was very far from the worst. I both liked and was annoyed by the description of Davy as appearing retarded and how he used that appearance to his advantage. On the other hand, Pangborn was quite good at describing the consequences of fertility problems. I recall Nickie fondly as a character, and felt badly for her problems. I loved his stolen horn as symbolism... Yesterday, my cat came when called. That worries me; I hope she's not ill! |
