Many scientists and people alike think that Neanderthals (Homo Neanderthalensis) are the closest species to us ever but is that true. The Neanderthals maybe closer to us than Erectus/Ergaster than or any other species but what about Heidelbergs (Homo Heildelbergenis)? Both Neanderthals and Sapiens (us) came from Heidelbergs and because of this I think we might actually be closer to Heidelbergs. Neanderthals for one evolved into different people than us and on top of all that Heidelbergs look closer to us. Neanderthals may have more intelligence than Heidelbergs but Heidelbergs looks more closely like us. For one they are taller than and not as stocky as Neanderthals and their facial features look more like us. Furthermore Heidelbergs may also be the Neanderthals closest relative too as well as our closest relative. What do you think? |

We are always going to be more closely related to our direct ancestors than to branches from that ancestor. I think Neanderthal is farther back in the direct line than late erectus or ergaster. Anything later than about 400kya is going to be closer to us than Neanderthal. In addition, I think the non-Neanderthals continued a habit of general in-breeding back with the very archaic homo sapiens to keep a genetic connection going while the Neanderthals were isolated from such genetic contribution. In short, my view is that erectus evolved in connection to the original African population to create the sapiens of today. The speed of time is 3,600 seconds per hour... |

Cavebear: You could be right, of course, but if you(or anyone else on this list)is/are interested in checking out another viewpoint, you might want to go to the following URL: http://www.ipa.min-cultura.pt/pubs/TA/folder/22 Everything there is downloadable, in PDF, for free, and you all might be especially interested in the conclouding chapter or section. I should tell everybody that this is concerning the Lagar Velho fossil and possible links to Neandertals. Whether or not you eventually end up agreeing with the contents, they're still worth looking at. Anne G |

Did you want to present a different opinion? Then I suggest you describe it. I would rather read your posted thoughts than just be casually referred to some other site. Part of the reason for being here is discussion, not just links. I want to know what YOU think and how you interpret information from other sources. The speed of time is 3,600 seconds per hour... |
