Thanks Anne. I just learned from Rob Sawyer that "vulpine" means "fox-like". Had no idea - it isn't a common word. Now, I know where that came from!

Thank you SSG, for specifying, as I knew, that Vulpids are Canids. I didn't realize the subtle difference between Canid and Canis though, and I thank you for the clarification.

I've always felt the vulpids weren't quite canis, but I didn't know why before and that explains a lot. I'm more knowledgeable about the felids... :-)

Can you (or anyone else) recommend a good book on the canids? I have an an interest in all the miacids and am trying to improve my understanding of the evolution of the whole group. I wouldn't mind a recommendation on the non-felid/canid miacids either, if you know of a good one.
Thank you, Carl Sagan...

Cavebear:

I know there are some books in my local libraries that might be worth recommending, but unfortunately at the moment I can't think of the names of them. Let me check around. BTW, do you want something fairly general, or fairly scientific?

I hate to ask for both, but may I? I'm not sure which would give me a better understanding of canid evolution. If it helps, I need a diagrammatic tree of past and present canids more than I need genetic details of present ones. I'm not so much interested in modern dog breeds as I am how past canids relate and split.

Hope that makes sense.

Cavebear:

I will bear this in mind. I will be going to one of my local libraries on Monday(and possibly another one on Tuesday), for a little rest, recreation, and research. While there, I will look for some titles you might be able to use, both scientific and "popular".

In the meanwhile --- this isn't books,
obviously --- I've found a site that yesterday had some admittedly pretty basic stuff about the Canidae family. It's something called About Animals and Wildlife, and I get RSS feeds which alert me to any interesting material.

Here is the link:

Hope this will at least get you started,
Anne G
