All: Still more news from Paleoanthropologyland and Prehistoric Archaeologyland. This is about the world's oldest beads. Found in Shkhul Cave, Israel, no less! http://www.nature.com/news/2006/060619/full/060619 -10.html Anne G |

Ah come on, they found them in Kebara and transported them over to Skhul - can't have Neanderthals making beads!

Scott: Nope. Neandertals can't make flutes, either, according to some otherresearchers. They can't make anything! They can only imitate "us", you know! Anne G |

Well to read some researchers, you would think that they barely walked upright! I doubt Neanderthals would have had the time to make beads. It is very time-intensive and what with them fighting off the dinosaurs, dragging their women around by the hair and looking for road-kill to eat - they wouldn't have had any time to sing, make beads or learn to talk.

Yes, and they used some flying dinosaurs as fans, mini-mammoths as vacuum cleaners and friendly velociraptors as family pets... Machiavelli was pretty devious. For a guy... |

But only after they had seen H. Sapiens using them. Neanderthal see, Neanderthal do... Chess is the purest form of debate, unadulterated by a topic. |

Scott: Plus, Neandertals couldn't even walk straight and efficient to a kill.. . . they had to do it by blundering into one, the time consuming way. Nope, no time for making beads for Neandertals, I'm afraid! Anne G |
