All: There's a nice little piece over on the Discovery Channel site, about a paper that just came out, regarding the possible archaic ancestries of various populations. Europeans may(theoretically, at least), have some 5% Neandertal genes, whatever those may be. Here is the link(and don't blame me if it doesn't show up, because this time, I did make sure there was one) http://dsc.discovery.com/news/2006/08/22/neanderth als_hum.html?category=technology&guid=200608221030 00 You might have to watch the wrap, though. And, if anybody is interested, I also have the actual paper in my files, and I'm going to sit down and read it tonight. Anne G |

Interesting. Let me know if the paper is of any use, I might be interested. I think it's fairly likely we have a lot of "things" in our genes. Neanderthal, Archaic, etc. People were nomads, after all, so they moved around a lot and found "mates" along the way. |

Azaelia(or anybody else): I haven't gotten to the paper as yet. I'm hoping to later today. And if you are interested, I will be happy to e-mail you the pdf. I'll let y'all know what I think at a slightly later time(like after I have read the paper, which is not very long). Anne G |

The Discovery Channel summary was quite interesting. Thanks for posting it. I'll be interested in hearing more about this. Thank you, Carl Sagan... |

Cavebear and all: The moment I hear anything more(and I think I have the paper buried in my files somewhere, but it is a pain to look up), I'll send the proper information forward. These things are important. Anne G |

SSG - Anything you learn and provide about our connections to Neanderthals, the newest information about Homo Florensis, etc, will always be appreciated. I do not have direct access to the latest professionally-published papers, so I have to depend on those few sources that report on such things carefully and accurately. The Washington Post newspaper routinely wins awards for science articles, and NewScientist magazine is dedicated to reporting on science. Still, the original publications are best and anything you can provide to us is helpful. Thank you, Carl Sagan... |

Cavebear: If you're interested, I can send you the relevant pdf. It's kind of "mathematics heavy"(it is molecular genetics, after all), but there are a couple of nice summaries that give you the gist in plain language. Feel free to let me know if you want it. Or anything else. Anne G |

I would like to read the article. I won't do too well with the genetic details, but I would like to see the summaries (and at least try to struggle with the genetics parts). Thank you, Carl Sagan... |

Scott and Cavebear: I tried to get a message to you yesterday about the "ancestries" article, but my computer decided to be cranky and then I ran out of time to fiddle with it. Could you e-mail your request to me again, at my e-mail address? I will then attach the relevant pdf.Ifor some reason, I never got Cavebear's request). Anne G |
