All: Has anybody seen the absolute outpouring of articles and news releases re the latest stuff on Neandertal gene sequencing? This, on top of the "brain gene" paper of a week ago? Everything is pretty "contradictory" right now. Anne G |

Things are a changing fast. I wonder where Stringer and company are? The naysayers, those that refused to consider interbreeding. While the studies don't confirm anything per se, they open up HUGE questions and directions for further study to confirm initial observations and possibilities! Scott: The latest "stuff" seems, sort of, to "confirm" that no interbreeding took place. I mean, that's what Pääbo and his team concluded with their genetic study, and the other folks(Noonan et al) concluded with theirs. OTOH, the week before, the guy who came up with the "brain gene" idea of interbreeding said just the opposite. So I guess Stringer & Co. can pick and choose who they want to echo. I did put up(I think) a link to the John Hawks blog FAQ on all this material. It's fairly technical in some parts, but it gives a good overview. Like me, Hawks seems to find all this material pretty contradictory and he has his problems with the conclusions of the genetic studies, based on his own research, naturally, but he has a pretty good grasp of these "technical" issues, and can weigh the current results up against some other studies that have been done.
